A ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢ photo went viral years ago and continues to be shared and circulated on social media feeds here and there. It was a picture of a German Shepherd who presumably dug a hole to stay close to her late owner’s grave. The dog looked ʙʀᴏᴋᴇɴ and ᴇxʜᴀᴜsᴛᴇᴅ.
When the story was first reported, the public made the assumption that this animal was someone’s pet. Dogs are famous for their loyalty and they have been known as “man’s best friend” for centuries. The story was widely shared on social media sites, people were overcome with sympathy for the ɢʀɪᴇᴠɪɴɢ animal.
But the real truth behind the viral photo is something no one expected. Animal rescuer Vesna Mihajloski did some investigation at the cemetery in Serbia and made a sʜᴏᴄᴋɪɴɢ discovery. The dog is actually a mother dog who dug a hole under the grave to create a warm and safe den for her four tiny puppies.
The German Shepherd mama had done her best to care for her four babies, but they were ᴡᴇᴀᴋ and needed medical attention. Vesna ʀᴇsᴄᴜᴇᴅ the family of five from the cold cemetery and successfully provided medical treatment, food, warmth, love, and safety.
The German Shepherd mama was determined to be a stray and later named “Mama” because of her sweet and attentive devotion to her offspring.
In the photos below, follow along the mother dog’s journey as she and her puppies receive the care they desperately needed. Thanks to Vesna and the heroes who stepped in to sᴀᴠᴇ them, the courageous canine family began to regain their health, and the transformation is astounding.
The puppies gradually develop, growing up to be healthy, playful and active puppies. With love and kindness, this mother and her children will now live the life they deserve.
